6 minute sketch: Prior to a home-cooked meal in Seattle, Winter 2020
When Mayumi and I arrived in Seattle on February 2nd, 2020, my older brother, Bryan, came and met us at the airport. We promptly boarded a bus to downtown Seattle and then switched to another one that took us nearby the apartment where he and his wife, Elizabeth live. Modest in size, the warm atmosphere was overflowing with “married cooperation” as Mayumi refers to it. Bryan had been preparing chicken curry from scratch for several hours earlier in the day, and the apartment smelled of home-cooked care. Elizabeth had crispy tortilla chips ready for us as well as a cactus salad for later. Mayumi and I sat on the white couch and enjoyed watching the two of them working together to prepare the final touches to our welcome dinner. It was a safe space that I sometimes still go to in my mind. Part of me is still there now.
