Inside Cihou Fort 在旗後砲臺裡面

For our 3rd six minute sketch during our trip to Kaohsiung, we visited the Cihou Fort . To get to this fort was very easy on a hot afternoon in March. We took the ferry after walking about ten minutes from the final station of the city’s light rail, past “Ice Street” (so nicknamed for its numerous shops selling shaved ice desserts). The ferry only took us about ten minutes to arrive in Cijin District, and from there, it was about a ten minute walk nearby the beach to a small pathway that led up to a lighthouse which was under renovation, but where we could still get good views of the city, as well as views of the site of the former British Consulate where we had been for the previous day’s sketch. The only time the fort saw any serious action was during the first Sino-Japanese War in 1895 after the signing of the Treaty of Shimonseki when local troops fought on against the victorious Japanese. It was a much calmer day when we visited the fort more than a century later and explored it under blue skies and a sea breeze.

Our 6 minute sketch of the scene above.
