A Shadow in the Field

This is the third instalment in a series focusing on Greek Mythology. This segment follows Hades Boredom. We find the beautiful young goddess, Persephone, out wandering on a perfectly clear day when she happens upon a tempting object on the ground.

Persephone palmed the pomegranate in her right hand. She thought it odd to find such a ripe fruit lying conspicuously amidst the field of larkspur.

She glanced around the horizon — not a pomegranate tree in sight.

And the strangest thing about the fruit was that it was perfectly ripe. It seemed as if it had been only recently dropped there, perhaps by a wandering traveler or a careless nymph.

The fruit throbbed in her hands. Why not try a bite? If it had been dropped here by somebody, they were clearly long gone.

She broke open its skin and the shiny pink seeds reflected Helios’ light. A single crow flew overhead.

Cawww….Cawwww….Cawwww

Grabbing one of the seeds, she quickly popped it into her mouth. She crunched on its sweetness.

Almost instantaneously a dark shadow crept over Persephone…
